When we talk about postpartum mental health, we usually talk about postpartum depression. But research suggests postpartum anxiety is actually more common — affecting up to 1 in 5 new mothers — and it gets missed constantly because the symptoms can look like 'being a good mom.'
What postpartum anxiety actually looks like
- Intrusive thoughts about something happening to your baby
- Checking the monitor or your baby's breathing compulsively
- Inability to sleep even when the baby is sleeping
- Racing heart, restlessness, gut issues, or panic that comes out of nowhere
- Hyper-vigilance disguised as 'just being careful'
- Rage or irritability that feels unfamiliar and shameful
Many New Jersey moms tell me they didn't realize what they were experiencing was anxiety. They thought they were just being responsible, or that this is what early motherhood is supposed to feel like. It isn't.
Why it's underdiagnosed in NJ (and everywhere)
Pediatric and OB visits screen briefly for depression but rarely for anxiety in any depth. Cultural messaging tells new mothers to be grateful, vigilant, and selfless — three things that conveniently mask the symptoms of postpartum anxiety. So women suffer quietly, often for months or years, while everyone around them tells them they're doing great.
How perinatal-informed therapy helps
Therapy for postpartum anxiety is not about 'getting back to normal.' Normal isn't a place you return to after becoming a mother — you are a new person now. Effective postpartum therapy combines:
- Perinatal-informed clinical care that takes maternal mental health seriously
- Nervous system regulation work specific to postpartum biology
- Matrescence-informed support — naming the developmental shift you're in
- Practical tools for sleep, intrusive thoughts, and partner communication
- A space where you can say the hard, dark, complicated thing without being judged
When to reach out
There is no threshold of suffering you need to hit before you're allowed to ask for help. If something feels off, that is enough. You do not have to wait until your baby is older. You do not have to wait until you're 'really struggling.'
"You are not behind. You are becoming."
Eden Root Therapy offers virtual postpartum therapy and maternal mental health support for women across New Jersey and New York. Sessions are telehealth, so you can join from your couch while baby naps.
